He alone is my refuge

Good morning,

If you have been watching the news in the last couple of weeks you have watched terrified people running for their lives.  The media makes sure that you keep seeing the same scenes over and over again in order to burn the images into our memories.  Unless the Holy Spirit alerts us of the real danger, we can easily be manipulated into a state of growing fear that keeps us looking inward rather than upward.  As sinful people, we find it easy to forget that the God who has saved us is still always with us.  God has given us the Bible filled with stories and promises of what God will do for those who really trust him. Now it is our turn to experience the power of the the God of the Universe being demonstrated to us as individuals.  The real danger that we face is that we get trapped into feeling that we must do something to make sure we are safe.  When we put ourselves in charge of the protective process, we will always be looking for traps and trouble instead of listening to our Savior for directions and ministry opportunities.  Since the Lord has already planned all the details of our lives on a daily basis, we really don't need to be ready for everything that could happen.  Our Savior has already taken care of what we will need. What he wants us to do is to live a life sheltered from everything that is not part of his plan.

It seems clear to me that the individual that God used to write Psalms 91 knew a great deal about the attacks of evil men and evil forces during his lifetime.  What God gives us in this Psalm is worth reading and or memorizing as part of our daily walk through these challenging times.  He begins and ends the Psalm with the key to finding rest and refuge and safety.  Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty. (v.1) The Lord says, “I will rescue those who love me. I will protect those who trust in my name. (v.14) Our Father God always knows what he is doing when he lets the wages of rebellious living take its natural course in the life of those who choose this way to live.  To those of us who have come to trust in God, we can look forward to experiencing hearts and minds at rest in his presence. This good man knew what he was talking about when he said, This I declare about the LORD: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I trust him.(v.2) As he continues through this song of praise he reminds us that sometimes we will see what happens to the ungodly without sharing in their fate. Though a thousand fall at your side, though ten thousand are dying around you, these evils will not touch you. Just open your eyes, and see how the wicked are punished.(vs.7,8)  May the Lord use these verses and so many more to turn our eyes on Jesus and follow him as he leads us through his plan for our lives.

Psalms 91:1 Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty. 2 This I declare about the LORD: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I trust him.
