Good morning,
When do we know that God is at work in our lives or in our world? The only time we can be sure that God is at work is when we have come to the end of our resources and the enemy looks bigger and stronger than ever before. The Bible is full of stories of battles fought against such overwhelming odds when God’s people knew that the outcome was going to be a disaster unless the Lord stepped in and did the impossible. When the people of Israel were leaving Egypt and found themselves caught between the sea and the strongest army in their world, even Moses was overwhelmed by the thought of the disaster that was about to happen. Who had ever heard of over a million people with all their herds and goods escaping a trap like that. It never crossed any of their minds that there was a way across the sea that would set these former slaves free. Their enemies were sure that when the morning came they would teach these upstart slaves a lesson that they would never forget. What actually happened was that by the time the sun came up the next morning the former slaves were safely on the other side of the sea and the enemies of God were drowned in the deep waters that they thought would make the perfect trap.
When David wrote Psalm 60 he was facing a situation that totally overwhelmed him and his army. But what David did was what Moses did. He called on God to save him and his people from certain destruction. David knew that the God who parted the Red Sea was the same God who was with his overwhelmed army. So God’s Spirit gave David the same assurance that Moses and the other men of faith before him had learned from their eternal God. When God decides to help his people, their enemies don’t stand a chance of getting their way. To this day the story of the Red Sea and the victories of the saints of old are still a part of what the the world around us has heard about our God. Now in our generation, I am convinced that God is about to do again what he did so many years ago on behalf of his beloved people. The nation of Israel and the people of God all over the world are being attacked and hated by more and more powerful nations and hateful religions. Their bold attacks and the small successes are setting them up for a confident attack on us weak religious people. They have us surrounded, they think. They are boldly planning to get rid of us, and rule the world for themselves. Now it’s our turn to call on our God in the face of our weakness and watch what God will do to trample down our foes. Check the Bible, it tells us so!
Psalms 60:11 Oh, please help us against our enemies, for all human help is useless. 12 With God’s help we will do mighty things, for he will trample down our foes.
