Good morning,
What makes a genuine professional, a professional? Whether it’s in sports or in a job, a genuine professional is someone who has mastered what they are doing so well that they very seldom make a mistake. In todays world a professional is not only good, they are often given a god status that allows people to love and respect them as though they actually were an almost perfect god. Now if a person has the right degrees or has passed the right number of challenges, what they say is considered truth to be trusted, even if there is no evidence that their opinion will meet the test of being perfectly right. It’s this very issue that makes people so sure that the God of the Bible can’t be trusted. He can’t be trusted to do what people expect him to do when they get into a difficult situation and need the help of a “real” professional to solve their issues. Instead of agreeing with their studied wisdom, he often does just the opposite of what everyone expected a good god would do for them. Right now in California we are going through another year of having very little rain. The crops are in danger of drying up and the trees may even die if they can’t get the water they need. In many places we see signs that say “Pray for Rain” but what little rain we have is not enough.
So where is God in all of this? When the Lord was talking to the prophet Isaiah he told him to write “My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” How can God be good when he doesn’t help us when we really need what we are praying for? God went on to say, “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.” When people don’t know the Lord and haven’t read guidelines for living they have no idea that God often turns off his rains when people rebel against him. It never occurs to most people that the God of the Bible is able to read peoples thoughts and see what’s in their hearts. If they are really hateful rebels, he has every right to turn off or turn on any of the features of what people call nature. Too much rain or not enough rain is his call. He sends heat and cold, wind and storms, sickness and health and success and failure whenever he thinks that people need that kind of treatment. The God of the Bible is the ultimate professional. He never makes a mistake! His ways are higher than our ways and his thoughts are higher than ours. As God’s kids do we ever complain about his work? Dear Lord, please help us to really trust you and worship you instead of deciding ourselves whether you are right or wrong in what you have decided to do.
Isaiah 55: 8 “My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. 9 For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.
