Why worry when we can pray

Good morning,

Why do you think God arranged for his special people to get stuck between a great big sea and an angry hoard of heavily armed troops when he took them out of their slavery?  He had promised them the promised land and now these newly freed slaves could only think in terms of total disaster.  Moses wasn’t a slave, but now he knew that there was no possible way they could escape the wrath of this huge army of hateful men.  Did he worry?  There was nothing in all of his training or background that gave him any training for getting out of a military situation of this sort. He did have training of a different sort that got him out of this mess.  Moses had learned to trust a miracle working God, so he said, “Don’t be afraid. Just stand still and watch the Lord rescue you today. The Egyptians you see today will never be seen again. The Lord himself will fight for you. Just stay calm. (Exodus 14:13,14)  The next verse tells us that Moses spoke with faith, but boy was he afraid.  God said, “Why are you crying out to me? Tell the people to get moving!”

Moses was God’s man, but he was still a man.  Paul, a man of faith, had lived through many overwhelming circumstances in his travels, but he was still a man as well.  What kept Moses and Paul going was learning that when overwhelmed buy circumstances, worry doesn’t solve anything.  What works is to start talking to God about what you see and think and what you need, but don’t whine about it.  If we thank God that he knows what he is doing and then rest in his solutions to our situation, God will gift us with his peace. Often his answer doesn’t happen as soon as we want or work out the way we think he will solve the challenge, but if we commit ourselves to trusting and waiting on him, he will give us his peace.  The peace he gives us doesn’t make sense and often our enemies will laugh at us or accuse us of not caring enough to solve the problem ourselves.  Moses and Paul learned that if their faith was heart based faith, God would guard their hearts and minds as they lived in the shadow of their God and Savior.  There is no doubt that things are chaotic these days, but may we, like them, focus on our Savior and not our problems.

Philippians 4:6 Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. 7 Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.
