The God of war, the God of peace

Good morning,

It was just 70 some years ago that a man with a plan decided to start changing the world with his great plan that had a very unexpected outcome.  I was just a little boy when his plan collapsed and it seemed that the world was left in ruins and confusion.  My distant relatives in Europe wrote letters of pain and loss that made a deep impression on me.  Was God there?  Did he care?  Did God let things get out of hand?  What none of us knew at that time was that the deadly wars that washed over the world would be the source of the most powerful missions outreach this world has ever know.  The battles took young men and women believers to countries and continents that were hidden from view and when they saw the overwhelming needs of the people they met they sensed the call of God to reach out with the Good News of the Gospel. That generation of called and chosen young people were involved in expanding God’s love and hope to the very edges of civilization, and to this day we are still seeing the results of their costly ministry to the lost and dying peoples of our world.

Now it seems that we are entering a new era of conflict and threats of nations to destroy the little nation of Israel.  Religious movements and power hungry nations and leaders are openly declaring their commitments to bring God’s chosen people and those who support them to total destruction.  They are boldly declaring to all the world that the time has come to end the lives of this hated group of people.  What they all absolutely refuse to believe is that there is a God, the God of the Bible, who has created this world and that he has filled it with beauty and creativity.  They despise the love and freedom he offers for the excitement of rebellion and power that keeps calling them to greater despair and emptiness. They can’t be still.  They must be in control.  But God’s truth is still what will determine the outcome of every plan and is still available to any who will listen to God’s loving voice.  What the Psalmist wrote is still true today.  He wrote, “Be still, and know that I am God.”  God told us that in the end, He would be honored by every nation.  He pointed out that he is also the God of war.  The God of the Bible leads an army far larger and more powerful than any army that has ever marched across the earth.  If you fight him, He will win and his enemies will lose.  Not only that, If he decides to protect those he loves, he will be a mighty fortress to those who come to him for safety.  Dear Lord, please help us to be still, to live by faith in your eternal power.  Thank you that you will never lose a battle you choose to win.

Psalm 46:10 “Be still, and know that I am God! I will be honored by every nation. I will be honored throughout the world.” 11 The LORD of Heaven’s Armies is here among us; the God of Israel is our fortress.
