God's light in the darkness

Good morning,

Last week the scientists around the world were celebrating the discovery of the God particle and this week the financial leaders of the world are faced with the discovery of the wickedness of the big national banks who have been robbing their people of vast sums of their hard earned money.  On the one hand the scientists are ignoring the real creator of the world and on the other hand the money people are ignoring the principles of honesty and integrity in dealing with other peoples wealth.  When David wrote Psalm 36 he started out with a broken heart.  He had lived long enough to see that sin is a powerful, hidden force in the hearts of God’s enemies.  No matter if they see the majesty of the heavens or the glitter of gold, their heart filters out the reality of an awesome God who has given both treasures for the benefit of all of us.  They really can’t see that what they are doing is an affront to God and a twisted use of God given gifts.  When confronted with their evil, they deny what they can and then blame the rest on someone else.  They may be famous or rich, but they are not wise or good.

If you pick up your Bible and thoughtfully read the whole chapter you will see the wonderful balance that David brings to this ever present problem.  There really is a God who created the heavens and the earth.  There really is a God who has arranged to meet the needs of every part of his creation.  We humans are really made in God’s image and God willingly pours his life into his kids.  The world around us may be living in darkness, but God’s truth gives us all the light we need to see why we are here and some of what God is doing in our lives.  When God pours out his unfailing love on us, he includes meeting all of our needs.  God knows that we will have bills to pay and unexpected expenses, so he has arranged all the circumstances that are needed to take care of us even in the most difficult times.  The other advantage that we have is that our Heavenly Father has promised that he will see to it that we will be given justice as a reward for the faith we display in following the directions of our loving Perfect Parent.

Psalms 36:1 Sin whispers to the wicked, deep within their hearts. They have no fear of God at all.  2 In their blind conceit, they cannot see how wicked they really are. 3 Everything they say is crooked and deceitful. They refuse to act wisely or do good.
9 For you are the fountain of life, the light by which we see. 10 Pour out your unfailing love on those who love you; give justice to those with honest hearts.
