What’s wrong when things seem to be going badly wrong? Right now in America we are going through a process that was designed to help our citizens choose leaders that will keep us out of trouble and will lead us in ways that will bring success and peace to our country. Alas, right now our country is in a whole lot of trouble and genuine peace and genuine success are only dreams in the minds of our leaders. Thoughtful people who live here are very aware that things are going badly wrong. Sadly, the people who have decided that they are the most worthy of our trust, have been and are still living lives that are self centered and based on a lie covered dream world of their own making. They neither fear the God of the Bible or see reality based on the standards that our Creator God has given us that define His ideas of right and wrong. At the very same time as our two candidates are debating one another with childish reasoning and ungodly attacks, the God who made us sent us a reminder of who really is the one we should trust. The God who is in charge of the weather sent us a powerful storm, Hurricane Matthew, that no person or scientist could control. Elihu, one of the wise men in Job’s story pointed out, The clouds churn about at his direction.They do whatever he commands throughout the earth. He makes these things happen either to punish people or to show his unfailing love.(Job 37:12,13)
Sadly what is wrong with America is a spiritual and moral disaster that has engulfed the whole world like it did in the days of Noah. Our Enemy has been able to convince us that what God has said to us in creation and in His Word, the Bible, can’t be trusted. Now we live lives based on our knowledge, our scientific discoveries and our love for doing things our own way. What we now blame on our life styles is actually the outcome of our own idea of who is in charge of our history. We as sinful people may have words and weapons and ungodly spiritual power on our side, but what does the God of creation have on his side when it comes to this battle for the eternal souls of men and women and boys and girls. He has his perfect love for his world, John 3:16, he has the forgiveness for our sins and the freedom from fear that he offers all who will live by faith in him. Our God offers us the peace that goes beyond our understanding and the promise of eternal life to all who will live by faith in the God who gave us life. For a man like Job, God showed him more about his love. For those who are adamantly apposed to their God, God has ways of dealing with those in rebellion to him that are already laid out and ready to go into action when he gives the word. God will never lose control of his world. God always finishes what he starts. Dear Lord, please help us to see your unfailing love in our lives and in your world day by day.
