Good morning,
His purpose for me
One of the benefits of growing older is the different meanings you discover as you read the Bible. When I was younger the only meaningful parts of the scriptures were those that were dealing with the challenges that I was facing at any given time. The only filter that I had was based on my personal fears and weaknesses and what the people around me were telling me about the part of life’s confusion I needed to watch out for. My personal approach to reading the Bible included underlining and sometimes dating these valuable guidelines from God. When I look back at my older, now worn out Bibles, it’s fascinating to see the battles I was fighting and to be reminded of how the Lord stepped into my situation and took care of us or me. As I was reading Psalm 57 recently it suddenly occurred to me how much I was like David, who wrote the psalm while running for his life. Even though David had been anointed as king, his father in law’s anger and hatred made him feel overwhelmed. David kept pleading with God, Have mercy on me, have mercy! David knew where to hide. He was hiding in a cave, but he still felt vulnerable and longed for God’s protection.
David knew that the only safe place for him to be was hiding under the shadow of God’s wings. As I have gotten older I have discovered that this kind of hiding didn’t happen when I ran away, it only happened when I went running to the only safe place on Earth, the presence of my Savior and Lord. As the Lord leads me to scripture after scripture and promise after promise, my blood pressure goes down and His peace grows more powerful and real. The other thing that helped David was that his God had anointed him with a purpose in life, someday he was going to be the king of God’s special people. In some way he was reminding God of what he had been promised. Now when I look ahead to the future, I don’t have to look ahead to being a king or some important person, but I do now know and now believe that my Father God really has planned every day of my life and that no enemy or unforeseen circumstance will ever be able to overwrite God eternal plan for me. Every one of God’s children are special to him and he has promised to never leave us or forsake us. He will work out his plans for our lives. I know he will fulfill his purpose for me in time and in eternity. Dear Lord, will you please keep helping us to see and remember this wonderful truth when we are attacked by fear and failure.
Psalms 57:1 Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy! I look to you for protection. I will hide beneath the shadow of your wings until the danger passes by. 2 I cry out to God Most High, to God who will fulfill his purpose for me.
