Jesus, the eternal Light

Good morning,

When a great leader dies and is buried we like to do them a great honor by lighting what we call an eternal flame that keeps burning day and night to remind us of their greatness and of our love for them even after they are long gone.  Of course the leaders family can run out of money or the leader falls into disgrace or an enemy comes along and destroys the reminder of the once loved person.  When God created our earth and our universe he designed our existence around the light of the world, Jesus.  When Jesus spoke our world into existence he built lights into our life cycle.  The sun did the job for the days and the moon and the stars did the job for the night. These lights will someday go out, so he built into our hearts and minds the ability to see the eternal spiritual light that will never be put out by anyone.  Jesus has given every person ever born into this temporary life the ability to choose to be born again into God’s eternal family. The light that he gives us will go on for eternity.

The problem comes for us who live in our present world.  The prince of this world loves the darkness.  He does his best work when we are convinced that his darkness is really the light.  Satan turned 1/3 of the angels against the God of light and delights in the thought of creating all different shades of darkness for those of us who are created in God’s image.  Jesus is light in himself.  Jesus has never been controlled by the darkness that seems so safe and attractive to us.  His light is able to shine into every corner of this world’s darkness no matter how oppressive or powerful the darkness feels to us.  Jesus has the ability to shine his eternal truth into the hardest of hearts and the darkest of minds and open them to a world of reality that keeps on getting brighter and brighter each day they live.  All this talk of the power of the dark forces winning out over the church and God’s covenant people is nothing more than lying words and impossible outcomes.  The Light of the World is Jesus.  May the Lord lead us into his loving light as we learn the joy of obeying the loving Savior who will someday banish the darkness for eternity.

John 1:4 The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.
