God's loving patience

Good morning,

There is a lot more than the falling leaves and the cool air this fall.  Many people are really worried that the ancient Mayan calendar ends next month and that will be the end of the world.  Others are all concerned that we are about to go over some financial cliff and our financial system will come crashing down.  Then again there are the Christians who say that Jesus is really coming back very soon and then in seven years time he will set up his kingdom here on earth.  It seems that most people who call themselves Christians and follow the Bible account of the future can hardly wait for the heavenly trumpet to blow to take all of us good people out of the way so that God can deal with all the wicked sinners on earth and show them who is actually in charge of this world.  Of course the world as a whole laughs at the whole bunch of us, for they have determined that what is happening now is just another step in the world becoming a much better place to live. The scoffers give as  proof that this kind of thinking has been going on for centuries and nothing has ever really changed.

They have a good point.  History just seems to keep repeating itself.  Then again if this is so true, why are most people so uptight that something big is about to happen.  I think that God has allowed this general sense of impending doom to be a warning to the world that things could soon change in ways that will be out of their control.  Back in Peter’s day people felt that way as well.  Peter knew that he would soon be in heaven, so he wrote letters to those who would follow him to not be controlled by the waiting process.  We know that Jesus is coming back again, it could be soon, but what displeases God is that we are living our lives to escape the challenges of living by faith.  Our Lord longs for us to be living lives that are built around living a day at a time following God’s directions for living peaceful lives that are pure and blameless in his sight.  You see, we have work to do in reaching out to the world around us with the Good News of a loving Savior who longs to save as many as possible from the emptiness of a life without eternal hope in an eternal Savior.  It’s true, he is coming back soon, but we have a lot of living to do so that we will finish the work we have been called to do.

2 Peter 3:14 And so, dear friends, while you are waiting for these things to happen, make every effort to be found living peaceful lives that are pure and blameless in his sight. 15 And remember, the Lord’s patience gives people time to be saved.
